A francia forradalom idején játszódik, valós szereplőkön és eseményeken alapuló, történelmi témát dolgoz fel. A gyereklányként Angliába került Orczy Emma magyar bárónő 1905-ben adta ki ezen a címen regényét, a könyv és a belőle készült film ma is világsiker.
