Francin, a kisvárosi sörfőzde gondnoka csendes, visszahúzódó, szinte aszkéta életmódot folytat, míg felesége, a bájos és mindenki által szeretett Maryska szereti a társaságot, a sertéshúst és a sört. A sörfőzde igazgatósága szigorú ellenőrzést ír elő, így Francin kénytelen mindenről jelentést írni. A helyzet csak tovább nehezedik, mikor megérkezik testvére, a kissé zajos és nagyvilági életet élő Pepin. A rendkívül álmos, ám annál vidámabb kisvárosban a változás lassanként kiterjed mindenre. Francin rádiót vesz, s ez a nagyszerű találmány végképp bebizonyítja az embereknek: eljött a "lerövidítések" korszaka, minden közelebb került, csökkennek a távolságok. A cég gépkocsit vásárol a lovak helyett, Pepin lefűrészeli az asztal lábait, Maryska pedig rövidre vágatja combig érő haját…
