London, este 11 óra, a Covent Gardenből kiözönlik az operakedvelő nézők tömege. Egy nagyszájú virágáruslány a tolongásban éktelen patáliát csap. Henry Higgins, a fonetika professzora felfigyel a lányra, és fogadást köt Pickering ezredessel, hogy hat hónap alatt hercegnőt varázsol a „csatornatöltelékből” csupán azáltal, hogy megtanítja helyesen beszélni. Az órák megkezdődnek, és Eliza Doolittle-ről kiderül, hogy elbűvölő egyéniség, de legalább annyira makacs, mint tanára, a megszállott Higgins.
