Szilvai professzor terve, hogy a gyámsága alá tartozó unokaöccséhez feleségül adja titokban nevelt gyámleányát, Mariskát. A fiúközben a professzor tudta nélkül Liliomfi néven színésznek áll, s mint "éhenkórász teátrista" meghódítja Mariska szívét. Az éppen megözvegyült professzor ellenzi a házasságot, pont attól félti a lányt, akihez feleségül szánja. Liliomfi pedig azt hiszi, hogy nagybátyja akarja elvenni szerelmét... Más választás nincs: szökni kell tehát! Mindenben Liliomfi hű színésztársa, Szellemfi van a fiatalok segítségére.
