A magyar színjátszás hőskorát idéző történetben Szilvai professzor titokban nevelt gyámleányát, Mariskát, fiához akarja adni. A fiú közben, mint istenadta tehetségű vándorszínész, Liliomfi néven sikert sikerre halmoz, és Mariskával a mindenható kifürkészhetetlen akaratából egymásba szeretnek. Ezt az égieknek köszönhető hepiendszerű kezdetet vajon mennyire bonyolíthatják meg a földhözragadt földiek? Vajh mily és főleg mennyi cselszövés és ármány kell ahhoz, hogy az ember az istenek akaratával szembeszegülve elérje azt, amit az istenek elrendeltek neki?

The story of the Fountain of Bakhchisarai is set in motion by a romance recounting the reason for the khan's gloom.
