A király könnyelműen belemegy az alkuba, amit a fiú kínál. Csupán annyit kér szolgálataiért cserébe, hogy mikor letelik az esztendő, megpattinthassa a király orrát. A király ráébred arra, hogy veszélyben az élete, ettől fogva azon fondorlatoskodik, hogy mielőbb elveszejtse Jánost.
