For the second in the festival’s concerts, once again the spotlight is on Switzerland and the pairing of master-student that is so characteristic of Hesse and his novel, The Glass Bead Game. Heinz Holliger and Dénes Várjon perform the work by Antal Doráti, who died in Switzerland. Whereas Holliger has been a sort of master figure in the lives of the festival’s artistic directors, he himself was once a student since he studied composition under Sándor Veress, naturally in Switzerland. And as a grateful scholar, he has devoted considerable energy to promoting the oeuvre of his one-time master. The interesting thing about the Brahms trio composed in Hofstetten, Switzerland, is that the composer himself was soloist at the Budapest premiere, playing with Jenő Hubay and Dávid Popper. The significance of the final piece in the evening, the clarinet quintet, is similar to the position of The Glass Bead Game in the oeuvre of Hesse. The fact that the performers of the Holliger work are all from Switzerland will come as no surprise at all.

Recommended for children ages 4 to 10 Hungarian-language discussion programme.
While the Fountain of Tears bubbles before him, Giray, khan of the Tatars, is lost in brooding. Just as the flow from the marble fount cannot be exhausted, his own sorrow will never diminish, either. The story of the Fountain of Bakhchisarai is set in motion by a romance recounting the reason for the khan's gloom.
