Camus Félreértés-e a XX. századi egzisztencialista dráma egyik alapműve. Témája, cselekményvezetése, jellemei mintha egy ókori görög sorstragédiát idéznének. Egy fogadóban két nő, anya és lánya várják a gazdag vendégeket, akiket eltesznek láb alól. Jan-ról a gazdag idegenről később kiderül, ő a család rég eltávozott fia. A félreértés tragikus végkifejlethez vezet. De mi lesz Martha-val, a lánnyal, és a fiú anyjával? És mi a szerepe az öreg szolgálónak, aki mindig mindenhol ott van?
