Schiller Don Carlosa a patetikus-retorikus schilleri eszmedráma remekbe szabott példája. A történet az intrikáktól vezérelt és rideg, végtelenül szabályozott spanyol udvar hatalmi keretei között játszódik. A dráma középpontjában Don Carlos, a habozó-gyötrődő herceg áll, akit szinte szétszakít személyes kapcsolatainak beteljesületlensége. Drámai akció szempontjából, a leghangsúlyosabb szereplő –az európai humanitás szószólója - Posa márki. Ő irányítja és kapcsolja össze a dráma szerelmi és politikai szálát egységes indítékrendszerré. Bár Carlos és Posa elbuknak, ifjúkoruk „aranyálma” a szükségszerűség birodalmában nem valósulhat meg, a dráma szárnyaló dikcióval kifejeződő eszmei síkján a szabadság és a barátság nemes ideáljai diadalmaskodnak.
