A történet, ami a 19. század egyik tipikus kalandregényének indult, méltán válhatott a kapitalizmus, a pénz világának szimbolikus művévé. Tímár Mihály, a legyőzhetetlennek hitt hős története, aki a hirtelen jött gazdagság, a mesés kincsre lelés dacára sem boldog. Mert nincs meg a mindennél fontosabb: az igaz szeretet. A boldogság még is eljön, hogy válaszút elé állítsa a hőst: megválik-e a vagyontól, társadalmi rangtól valamiért, ami kézzel nem fogható, talán csak egy illúzió. A century ago, the world first encountered this remarkable opus, a work that soon became one of the cornerstones of twentieth-century musical innovation. Premiered in 1926, the singspiel is a milestone in Hungarian music history: its composer, Zoltán Kodály, fulfilled his aspiration to elevate Hungarian folk song of ancient origin to the same status as classical music, by virtue of its equivalent values, placing it on the stage of the nation’s Opera House.
