Tolsztoj 1872-ben szemtanúja volt egy szerelmi csalódása miatt tehervonat alá ugró nő halálának. Talán akkor kezdte foglalkoztatni egy a társadalom szemében törvénytelen szerelem rajzát adó mű ötlete, amelynek főszereplője a teljes élet után vágyakozó férjes asszony, aki otthagyja boldogtalan házasságát fiatal szerelme miatt. A szerző állítólag Puskin lányáról mintázta a főhőse külsejét.
