Hogy mit tud ez a címbéli köntös, vagy törökül kaftán? Megszólalni ugyan nem szólal meg, de senki sem tudja, miért, mitől, parancsolni tud, de olyan erővel, hogy még a nagy Olaj béget is porba kényszeríti: a kaftánt hordó álruhás Cinna parancsára a bég csapataival együtt eltakarodik a város környékéről. Kecskemét tehát megmenekülni látszik. És mégsem menekül meg. A városban ugyanis él még egy szabó, Lestyák Mátyás, a főbíró apja, aki azt veszi a fejébe, hogy az elócskuló köntös szikrázóan új másolatával lepi meg a várost, az eredeti köntöst pedig eladja – és ez, valahogy, a fejébe kerül. Cinna pedig általa a vérpadra jut. De ezzel még nincs vége a történetnek…!
A színpadi változat egyszerre szól diákoknak és felmenőiknek, egyszóval mindenkinek, aki szereti az izgalmakat, barátja a szerelemnek, és együtt érző tanúja az emberi esendőségnek, és örömöt talál a felnőtteknek szánt mesékben.
