Richard Hannay középkorú, jól szituált, jó megjelenésű agglegény meglehetős unalomban éli szürke hétköznapjait Londonban, amíg egy napon véletlenül össze nem találkozik egy feltűnően csinos fiatal nővel, és hirtelen egy irtózatos bűnügy kellős közepén nem találja magát. A harminckilenc lépcső John Buchan 1915-ös regénye, és Alfred Hitchcock 1935-ös filmjének adaptációja. Patrick Barlow 2005-ös színpadi változata óriási sikert aratott Londonban, és azóta az egész világot bejárta. A darab érdekessége, hogy az eredeti történetet négy szereplőre szűkíti.
Csak a Hannay-t alakító férfiszínész játszik egy szerepet, a színésznő három, egymástól teljesen eltérő figurát jelenít meg. A többi huszonhat szerepet pedig másik két színész alakítja. Ettől az eredeti kémtörténet izgalma leginkább bűnügyi komédiába fordul.

A century ago, the world first encountered this remarkable opus, a work that soon became one of the cornerstones of twentieth-century musical innovation. Premiered in 1926, the singspiel is a milestone in Hungarian music history: its composer, Zoltán Kodály, fulfilled his aspiration to elevate Hungarian folk song of ancient origin to the same status as classical music, by virtue of its equivalent values, placing it on the stage of the nation’s Opera House.
A 60-minute tour starts every day at 13:30, 15:00 and 16:30 in English.
